The stabilizing or “core” muscles provide support for the pelvis and low back by increasing the stiffness of the lumbar spine. We want to train the inside muscles first, then the outside. The inside muscles provide support in the links between each segment of the spine. A simple way to “engage” your core is to breath in through your mouth, then as you exhale, pull your bellybutton in towards your spine. (Imagine you are trying to put on a very tight pair of pants…suck in the tummy!)
