PUT SOME VITALITY IN YOUR SUMMER
Are you physically active? Do you eat properly? Do you look on the bright side of things? Are you self-confident and do you accept yourself as you are? Don’t you think that it would be in your best interests to improve your well-being?
This summer, the password is “vitality”! Discover the joy of eating well, choose physical activities that get your motor running, and learn to feel better physically and mentally. After all, you deserve it. Your body and mind will thank you. To get you started, here are some things to consider.
BREAKFAST: A VITAL PART OF YOUR DAY
Start your day right. There’s no use in rushing; first you have to eat. Fix yourself a tasty and nourishing breakfast. This meal should meet part of your daily energy requirements, so it’s absolutely essential that you not skip this meal and go on an empty stomach all morning.
Eating well means eating wisely and enjoying what you eat. The main emphasis should be on grains, which are full of nutrients and dietary fibre. Among the best choices are the lower glycemic grains: flax or sprouted wheat breads, Steel cut oats or slow cooked porridge, all bran cereals; quinoa and barley. Prepare a wholesome menu. Why not eat your breakfast on the balcony or in the garden? Another plus: this is a great way to start your day off on the right foot; you’ll feel more energetic.
Is your appetite peckish when you first get up, or are you rushed for time? The evening before, set out everything you’ll need on a pretty tray. Or check out a low Glycemic shake from the Meals in Minutes Cookbook. Tell yourself that if, each day, you eat foods that are a pleasure to look at and that taste good, your appetite is sure to pick up. It’s a matter of getting into the habit.
GET ACTIVE
Activity and enjoying life go together. Keep in mind that there is lots to do from biking to rollerblading to hiking. To satisfy your thirst, take along a bottle of water, you froze the night before to keep it cold. Pack it all in recyclable containers.
OVERALL WELL-BEING
This summer, learn to love being in motion. Being active means integrating physical activity into your daily life. Nobody’s forcing you to lie and bake in the sun for hours. Immobility is the sworn enemy of vitality. Anytime is a good time for leading an active life. Garden, swim, skate, dance, walk the dog, play a team sport, get off the bus three stops early and finish the trip on foot, or do muscle stretches while you watch television. Make a resolution to get yourself moving at least once a day. The important thing is that you engage in an activity that appeals to you.
Vitality also means deriving enjoyment from eating well. Make sure your diet is healthy, Low Glycemic, varied and balanced. Eat things that are colourful and flavourful and that have different textures. To meet your body’s nutritional needs and stay healthy, you need to eat products from the four food groups everyday: grains, vegetables and fruit, dairy products, and meat and meat alternatives. You also have to enjoy a variety of foods chosen from each of these groups. Finally, a good diet contains little fat, salt and alcohol.
Finally, think about what you would like to do to feel good. Find ways of integrating these things into your life. Little by little, learn to appreciate yourself the way you are. In time, your physical, psychological and social well-being will benefit greatly. Take advantage of the summer to discover your strong points and have a good time. There’s nothing wrong with doing yourself some good! In fact, that’s true all year round…
