I am often asked how do you keep to a Low Glycemic diet when eating out in Restaurants? You need to plan in advance. Try to choose a restaurant that has a menu offering healthy choices such as, grilled fish, meat and poultry dishes and lots of fresh vegetables and salads.

Remember that at restaurants, portion sizes are usually much larger than at home. You need to be assertive and ask for what you want.

Here are some tips:

  • Always order your dressing on the side so you can control the amount you use
  • Order a green salad to start. Salads have a very low GI rating and will help you fill up before the main course arrives
  • Avoid bread and strachy side dishes
  • Instead of ordering one large entree, order two appetizers or an appetizer and a salad as your meal
  • Consider sharing an entrée with a friend
  • Eat slowly; your stomach can take up to 30 minutes to let your brain know you are full

For example, our family was at Granville Island last weekend, and my daughter and I both had a Roasted Beet Salad with feta and Chicken with Balsamic Dressing. Emphasis was on the protein and the vegetables. We loved the salad and didn’t miss the bread or starch.
